DORIAN DROVE HIS CURRICLE to his brothel and he asked Sally to have Emma brought to the parlor. He paced in there, shoving back his hair, struggling to control his breathing.

“You’ve returned, my lord.”

It was Emma, standing in the doorway. She looked less than pleased to see him but he had no time for arguments. He wanted to ask her where she had been, but it would raise her hackles, make her obstinate. And all that mattered was that she had returned.

“I am haunted by memories, Emma. Memories of the night I lost someone I loved dearly. When I was a boy. When I’m with you, I forget the bad memories. All I need is one kiss.”

“Oh, Emma, kiss him!” gasped one of the women. Apparently they had audience listening in.

Emma’s gaze met his, filled with wariness. “That first night, the night of the storm, I knew you were haunted by something. My lord, who did you—?”

“It is something I can’t talk about, Emma.” He walked over to her until he was inches away.

The other women crowded closer and he could see them from where he stood. Sally dabbed her eyes with a frilly handkerchief.

“But why do you want a kiss from me?” Emma asked.

“Because a kiss from you takes away the pain.”

“Oh, for the love of me Uncle Mick, kiss him!” cried Rose.

Emma bit her lip. Then to his surprise, she softened her lips and rose onto her tiptoes. Carefully, she pressed her mouth to his. Dorian let her kiss him, then he parted his mouth and caressed her lips with his. He deepened the kiss slowly. Little by little, he made the kiss hotter, more intimate.

Desire surged in him, but he kept it controlled. Fighting to rein in his desire helped to push his memories back. Until there was only Emma.

He heard sighs from all the other women as they watched.

He kept kissing Emma until she pulled back. Her eyelids were half closed, making her eyes look sultry. She gasped for breath. She swayed dizzily.

He’d made her melt. He drew back and said, huskily, “I want to spend tonight with you, Emma. But not here—I want to take you to the theatre. I shall change and return for you.”

Emma’s jaw dropped. “The theatre? But why, my lord—?”

“Never mind why.” Sally bustled into the room. “She says ‘yes’, milord. When will you come for ’er? We’ll have ’er ready.”
